The Journey

In 2010, the photographer John Perivolaris was commissioned to undertake a month-long journey by train, ship, and aeroplane from Manchester, UK, via Calais, Paris and Marseilles, in France, to Algiers and Annaba, in Algeria. The photographs here were made and found during this journey and also includes some of the postcards Perivolaris sent home. The work collected here was exhibited as part of the New Cartographies exhibition at Cornerhouse, Manchester, UK, between April-June 2011.

The project involved  a series of collaborations, without which it would not have been possible for the photographer to produce the work contained here.  He should like to thank the following: Joseph McGonagle  and Edward Welch, who, with the help of a large AHRC grant, commissioned and helped plan the photographer's  journey, as well as corresponding with him  by postcard along the way. The photographer is also grateful to them for their curation of his work as part of New Cartographies.  In Algeria, the photographer is  grateful for the assistance and friendship of  Réda Samy Zazoun, Atef Beredjem, Zineddine Bessaï, Nadira Laggoune and Rafik Laggoune.  In Manchester, Sarah Perks, Sarah Shelley, Tomas Harold, Christina Millare, and Ella Byford were not only paragons of efficiency but also a pleasure to work with during the organisation of the exhibition at Cornerhouse.
